Popular social media apps TikTok and WeChat will be banned from mobile app stores starting Sunday, as part of the Trump administration’s push to get TikTok sold to a U.S. company. Jeff Pegues reports.
The government said its order, previously announced by Trump in August, will ‘combat China’s malicious collection of American citizens’ personal data.’ …
The order, which cites national security and data privacy concerns, follows weeks of dealmaking over the video-sharing service TikTok.
Sources said the ban could be rescinded by Sunday if TikTok manages to get the greenlight on its deal with Oracle before then.
The U.S. government has sent letters of inquiry to American companies affiliated with Chinese conglomerate, Tencent, including Epic Games.
The U.S. Commerce Department said it is prohibiting Chinese-owned TikTok and WeChat from app stores as of Sunday, citing national security and data privacy concerns.
The Commerce Department noted that both apps collect location data, network activity, browsing history and other information about its U.S. users.
